2. Monsoon Fury Swells Narmada Basin, Orange Alerts Issued

Why in News: Heavy monsoon rain continued across Madhya Pradesh through 5 and 6 July 2026, swelling rivers and disrupting connectivity, with the IMD issuing orange alerts for several districts.

Background: The IMD issued orange alerts for extremely heavy rain in Harda, Narmadapuram, Raisen, Chhindwara, Pandhurna and Balaghat, forecasting four to eight inches of rain in 24 hours, after earlier red alerts in Dhar, Barwani and Khargone. On Sunday, 6 July 2026, rain disrupted connectivity in Harda and the Parvati river overflowed in Sehore, while streets flooded in Indore. Madhya Pradesh is the source region of major rivers such as the Narmada, Chambal, Betwa, Tapti and Son, and heavy upper-catchment rain quickly raises their levels. This connects to Madhya Pradesh geography, drainage and disaster management.

MPPSC Relevance: Prelims Narmada, Betwa, Chambal, Tapti; IMD colour-coded alerts; affected districts. Mains GS1 monsoon and drainage; GS3 flood management and early warning.

3. Chita Andolan Relaunched Against Ken-Betwa Project in Panna

Why in News: On 3 July 2026, Adivasi women and farmers in Bundelkhand relaunched the suspended Chita Andolan near the Barana river, a Ken tributary close to the project-affected village of Kupi in the Ken-Betwa area.

Background: Led by the Jai Kisan Sangathan under the slogan “Nyay Do Ya Mar Do” (Give Us Justice or Let Us Die), the symbolic protest of lying on funeral pyres returned after the state allegedly failed to honour commitments made in April 2026, when the first andolan was called off. Protest leaders say displacement under the Ken-Betwa Link Project has affected livelihoods, land, forests and culture in the Panna and Chhatarpur belt. The agitation highlights land-acquisition, rehabilitation and forest-rights concerns around India’s first inter-state river-linking scheme. This connects to Madhya Pradesh tribal welfare, land rights and displacement governance.

MPPSC Relevance: Prelims Chita Andolan, Jai Kisan Sangathan, Barana river, Kupi village. Mains GS1 tribal society and displacement; GS2 rehabilitation policy and forest rights; GS3 large-project impacts.

4. Madhya Pradesh Sets Roadmap for Uniform Civil Code

Why in News: In early July 2026, CM Mohan Yadav reaffirmed that Madhya Pradesh intends to bring the Uniform Civil Code into force during July, with a Bill likely in the monsoon session of the Assembly.

Background: A six-member expert committee headed by retired Supreme Court judge Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai was constituted in April 2026 to prepare a draft UCC Bill, consulting stakeholders and examining laws passed by other states. The committee’s tenure was extended to 26 July 2026, and the Bill is expected to cover marriage, divorce, inheritance, adoption, succession and live-in relationships, replacing religion-based personal laws with a uniform civil code. 5. Ken-Betwa Link Project: India’s First River Interlink

Why in News: The Ken-Betwa Link Project remained in focus in early July 2026, both through the cabinet’s rehabilitation funding and the renewed Chita Andolan protest.

Background: The Ken-Betwa Link Project, worth about Rs 44,605 crore, is India’s first inter-state river-linking scheme. It involves the 77-metre-high and 2.13-kilometre-long Daudhan Dam and tunnels within the Panna Tiger Reserve, transferring surplus water from the Ken to the Betwa via a 221-kilometre link canal. The project is designed to provide irrigation and drinking water across Bundelkhand in both Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, but faces criticism over submergence in the Panna Tiger Reserve and displacement of affected villages.
