1. Madhya Pradesh Secures 12 Horticulture GI Tags in a National First

Why in News: Around 30 June to 1 July 2026, Madhya Pradesh became the first state in India to secure Geographical Indication (GI) tags for 12 horticulture crops in a single phase, a milestone credited to a coordinated push by the state horticulture department under CM Dr. Mohan Yadav.

Background: The dozen tagged products include Kumbhraj Coriander (Guna), Barman Brinjal and Narsinghpur Jaggery (Narsinghpur), Gajariya Mango (Betul), Noorjahan Mango (Alirajpur), Jabalpur Green Pea and Jabalpur Water Chestnut, Seoni Custard Apple and Malvi Potato among others. A GI tag is a sign used on products with a specific geographical origin and qualities due to that origin, protecting producers and premium pricing. Guna alone contributes a fifth to a quarter of India’s coriander output. This connects to Madhya Pradesh agriculture, horticulture and intellectual property recognition.

MPPSC Relevance: Prelims Geographical Indication, GI Registry, Kumbhraj coriander, Noorjahan mango. Mains GS3 agriculture value addition, GI as a tool for farmer incomes.

2. Bhavantar Bhugtan Yojana Extended to Paddy, Seoni Projects Launched

Why in News: On 1 July 2026, CM Dr. Mohan Yadav, while sowing paddy alongside farmers in Seoni district, announced that paddy growers would now be covered under the Bhavantar Bhugtan Yojana and dedicated and laid the foundation of projects worth over Rs 494 crore for the district.

Background: The Bhavantar Bhugtan Yojana is a price-deficiency payment scheme under which the state compensates farmers for the gap between the Minimum Support Price (MSP) and the actual market price when prices fall below MSP. Originally applied to selected oilseeds and pulses, its extension to paddy is aimed at protecting Madhya Pradesh’s large kharif rice belt in districts such as Seoni, Balaghat and Mandla. This connects to Madhya Pradesh agricultural price policy and farmer welfare.

3. Cheetahs Cleared for Relocation from Kuno to Gandhi Sagar

Why in News: Reaffirmed in late June 2026, the Cheetah Project Steering Committee has approved the relocation of cheetahs from Kuno National Park to the Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary, the next major step in expanding India’s cheetah range across Madhya Pradesh.

Background: Project Cheetah began in 2022 with the translocation of 8 cheetahs from Namibia and 12 from South Africa to Kuno, in Sheopur district. Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary, in Mandsaur and Neemuch districts on the Chambal, is planned as the second home to build a cheetah metapopulation of 60 to 70 animals across the Kuno to Gandhi Sagar landscape that extends into neighbouring Rajasthan. Why in News: On 2 July 2026, the Destination Madhya Pradesh Healthcare Conclave 2026 was held in Bhopal, organised by the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHDCCI), positioning the state as a national hub for healthcare and medical value travel.

Background: The conclave brought together policymakers, hospital chains, medical educators, AYUSH practitioners and investors to promote medical tourism and healthcare investment in Madhya Pradesh. The state’s pitch rests on its modern hospitals, growing medical colleges, improved connectivity and strong AYUSH and wellness traditions. Medical value travel, where patients travel for affordable quality treatment, is a growing segment India is trying to capture. Why in News: Around 2 to 3 July 2026, the India Meteorological Department flagged active monsoon conditions over Madhya Pradesh, with rain, thunderstorm and lightning alerts for several districts across the Malwa, Nimar, Mahakoshal and Baghelkhand regions.

Background: Madhya Pradesh is largely rain-fed, and the kharif sowing of soybean, paddy and pulses depends on a timely and well-spread monsoon. The IMD Bhopal centre issues district-level bulletins warning of heavy rain and lightning, while good rainfall also aids groundwater recharge and reservoir storage. A robust monsoon is central to the state’s agrarian economy and the incomes announced under schemes such as Bhavantar. This connects to Madhya Pradesh geography, agriculture and disaster preparedness.

Background: As per the 2022 All India Tiger Estimation, Madhya Pradesh recorded the highest number of wild tigers of any state, spread across Kanha, Bandhavgarh, Pench, Satpura and Panna. With Kuno and Gandhi Sagar hosting cheetahs, the state is the only one in India to be home to tigers, leopards, and cheetahs, alongside other big cats, strengthening wildlife tourism and conservation credentials.
