Health Ministry Launches JOSH Teams for a Youth-Led TB Push
Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda on 8 October 2026 launched JOSH (Joint Squad for Health) Teams under the TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi. The teams bring MY Bharat volunteers and NCC cadets into the campaign against tuberculosis at the block and ward level.
- Each JOSH Team has five MY Bharat volunteers and five NCC cadets and is led by a designated Class-I officer at the block or ward level.
- So far 6,347 JOSH Squads have been formed, bringing together 31,429 MY Bharat volunteers and 26,794 NCC cadets, the Union Health Secretary said.
- In the first phase, the teams have been deployed in 55 districts across 11 States and Union Territories; the remaining districts will follow.
- The initiative is run by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare with the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and the Ministry of Defence, with the participation of the Government of NCT of Delhi.
- The event felicitated 67,933 Panchayats across 697 districts declared TB Mukt in 2026.
- Referring to the latest World Health Organization report, the Minister said TB incidence in India has declined by 21 per cent, against 12 per cent globally, and that treatment coverage has risen to 92 per cent, against 78 per cent globally.
Why it matters. The Minister’s stress was on active case finding: people who have TB without knowing it stay outside the health system and keep passing the infection on within their families. The tasks listed for the volunteers are the ones a clinic cannot do from a distance: identifying people who may have TB, spreading awareness on prevention and nutrition, counselling patients to complete their treatment and reducing stigma.
📌 Facts Corner
- JOSH = Joint Squad for Health, under the TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan.
- One team: 5 MY Bharat volunteers + 5 NCC cadets, led by a Class-I officer (block or ward).
- First phase: 55 districts in 11 States and UTs.
- Khushi Avatar, an e-Sangini initiative launched at the same event, gives TB information and medicine reminders in 12 Indian languages.
Supreme Court Orders an Expert Panel on Pharma Marketing Practices
The Supreme Court on 8 October 2026 directed the Union government to constitute an expert committee within two weeks to recommend how to curb unethical marketing practices by pharmaceutical companies. The committee is to consult stakeholders and submit its recommendations within two months of its first meeting. A Bench of Justice Vikram Nath and Justice Sandeep Mehta passed the order on petitions filed by the Federation of Medical and Sales Representatives’ Associations of India (FMRAI) and others.
- The petitioners sought statutory regulation of pharmaceutical marketing. The Court had earlier asked whether the Uniform Code for Pharmaceutical Marketing Practices (UCPMP), 2024 had sufficient enforcement mechanisms, and whether the Centre intended to give it statutory backing.
- Solicitor General Tushar Mehta told the Court that the Union would set up a three-member committee to examine whether statutory regulation was necessary and, if so, what form it should take. The UCPMP continues to govern marketing practices in the meantime.
- The petitioners argued that the present regime penalises doctors who accept gifts and other benefits but has no statutory mechanism to penalise the companies that offer them.
- They relied on Apex Laboratories Pvt. Ltd. v. Deputy Commissioner of Income Tax (2022), in which the Court observed that doctors have a quasi-fiduciary relationship with patients and that benefits from drug companies could influence prescriptions.
- The matter will be listed on 29 January for the Union’s compliance affidavit.
Why it matters. A prescription should follow the patient’s need, not a gift to the doctor. The gap the petitioners pointed to, a penalty for the doctor who accepts but none in law for the company that gives, is what a statutory code would close. The order sets a timeline for advice; it does not itself frame any rules. It sits beside today’s deep dive on the cancer-drug margin cap: one deals with what a medicine costs, the other with why it is prescribed.
📌 Facts Corner
- UCPMP, 2024: the present code on pharmaceutical marketing; the Court questioned its enforcement.
- Apex Laboratories (2022): doctors stand in a quasi-fiduciary relationship with patients.
- Committee: to be constituted within two weeks; recommendations within two months of its first meeting.
- Petitioner: FMRAI. Bench: Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta.
PM Calls for a Global Framework Against Cyber Fraud and Deepfakes
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 8 October 2026 inaugurated the 10th edition of the India Mobile Congress (IMC) at Yashobhoomi, New Delhi. He said cyber fraud and deepfakes exploit global vulnerabilities and called for an urgent, coordinated Global Framework uniting governments, technology companies, telecom operators and financial institutions.
- He challenged the GSMA to help build mechanisms that intercept fraud before it reaches the end user. India is also hosting the GSMA Board meeting.
- He described the security of phones and networks as a priority, saying that for the common citizen, “trust is very important”.
- 5G now operates from over 5.5 lakh base stations and has reached every district, he said. He had launched 5G from the IMC stage in 2022.
Why it matters. Cyber fraud and deepfakes cross borders, so no one country’s rules can stop them on their own. The Prime Minister’s pitch has two parts: common international rules, and fraud stopped inside the network by operators rather than left to the user to spot.
📌 Facts Corner
- IMC 2026: the 10th edition, at Yashobhoomi, New Delhi.
- GSMA: the global industry body of mobile operators; the PM asked it to help intercept fraud before it reaches users.
- 5G: over 5.5 lakh base stations, present in every district (PM, 8 October 2026).
World Bank’s World Development Report 2026 on AI Launched in New Delhi
Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw on 8 October 2026 launched the World Bank Group’s World Development Report 2026: The Promise of Artificial Intelligence in New Delhi. The launch was organised by the IndiaAI Mission, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), with the World Bank Group.
- The report sets out a framework for developing economies to harness AI for development through adoption, adaptation and advancement.
- Its core messages, as presented at the launch: “be optimistic, be strategic and be pragmatic. Countries should adopt and adapt AI, then advance”. It advises adapting AI tools to local contexts rather than spending billions building advanced systems from scratch.
- MeitY Secretary S. Krishnan said the report sets out a sensible approach to regulation: “rely on existing laws and voluntary compliance, and revisit regulation as the technology evolves”.
Why it matters. The report’s advice to developing countries is to use and adapt AI that already exists before trying to build frontier systems. MeitY Secretary S. Krishnan said the report “sets out a sensible approach to regulation: rely on existing laws and voluntary compliance, and revisit regulation as the technology evolves”.
📌 Facts Corner
- WDR 2026: “The Promise of Artificial Intelligence”, by the World Bank Group; India launch by the IndiaAI Mission (MeitY).

US Suspends Major IT Firms from Its Green Card Programme
The US government is suspending Microsoft, Adobe and several large IT firms from a programme that allows skilled foreign workers to gain permanent residency (the green card), US officials announced on 8 October 2026, Reuters reported. The officials cited alleged fraud and an effort to push companies to hire more Americans.
- The firms named include Cognizant, Infosys, Tata, Wipro, HCL and Capgemini.
- A senior official said: “We will not accept any new or process any pending permanent labour certification applications involving these companies”.
- The US Vice President accused Microsoft of abusing the H-1B visa programme; Microsoft said the “vast majority” of its US employees were Americans.
- Nine universities, including Yale, Stanford and MIT, would also be probed over a separate visa programme for study exchanges, the Vice President said.
Why it matters. The list includes Indian IT companies Infosys, Tata, Wipro and HCL. Stopping new and pending labour certification applications puts the permanent-residency path of their sponsored employees on hold, and adds to US pressure on firms that depend on skilled foreign workers. For India, skilled mobility is a standing issue in its relations with the United States.
📌 Facts Corner
- Green card: US permanent residency; the suspension covers permanent labour certification applications, new and pending.
- H-1B: a US visa for skilled foreign workers; the green card suspension is a separate measure.
- Named firms: Microsoft, Adobe, Cognizant, Infosys, Tata, Wipro, HCL, Capgemini.
Nobel Prize in Literature 2026 Goes to Anne Carson
The Nobel Prize in Literature for 2026 has been awarded to the Canadian author Anne Carson, the Nobel press release of 8 October 2026 announced. The citation reads: “for her bold and inventive oeuvre that, in playful dialogue with the classical tradition, has created new forms for contemporary literature”.
Why it matters. Nobel laureates are a staple of Prelims. Remember the three anchors: the name, the nationality (Canadian) and the citation’s key phrase, “dialogue with the classical tradition”. This week’s Nobel announcements run from 5 to 12 October; the Chemistry prize was covered in the 8 October edition.
📌 Facts Corner
- Nobel Prize in Literature 2026: Anne Carson (Canada), announced 8 October 2026.

- The US measure suspends permanent residency (green card) labour certification, not H-1B visas.
- TB: the 21 per cent decline is India’s; the global decline is 12 per cent. Do not swap them, and do not confuse incidence with treatment coverage (92 per cent).
