What an Optical Inter-Satellite Link Actually Is
Traditional satellite communication uses radio frequency (RF), bands like C, X, Ku and Ka in the microwave spectrum. Two problems compound as constellations grow. Spectrum is scarce: every RF band is regulated by the International Telecommunication Union and the national spectrum authority, and licensed bandwidth per operator is finite. Interference is real: hundreds of new satellites in low Earth orbit compete for the same slice, and downlinks compete with terrestrial services.
Optical Inter-Satellite Links solve for both. OISL sends data on a collimated laser beam between two satellites. The beam is:
- Extremely narrow, a fraction of a degree of divergence, so a receiver only 10 km off-axis sees nothing. This is a security feature: eavesdropping is orders of magnitude harder than for an RF broadcast that spills across a whole footprint.

AstroLink Micro at TRL 8 means the terminal is qualified for flight but has not yet flown a full mission.
