A high-power inter-ministerial committee headed by the Secretary (Consumer Affairs) framed the policy, with representatives from NPL, ISRO, IIT Kanpur, the National Informatics Centre, CERT-In, SEBI, and the railways and telecom departments. India has pursued an indigenous Man Portable Anti-Tank Guided Missile through the DRDO while operating a mixed inventory that includes the Israeli Spike. A structure in which the critical seeker and guidance electronics remain American, with Indian industry performing final assembly, delivers capability quickly but leaves the technology depth abroad. Whether that is a pragmatic answer to a pressing requirement or a shadow over the indigenous programme is a genuine and open debate.
The 26th SCO Summit at Bishkek
The 26th meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation was held at Bishkek, Kyrgyz Republic, on 31 August and 1 September 2026, chaired by Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov under the theme “25 Years of the SCO: Together for Sustainable Peace, Development and Prosperity”. India’s positions at the summit. Prime Minister Modi framed India’s approach around Security, Connectivity and Opportunity, pressed for no double standards in countering terrorism, and supported greater connectivity between SCO markets while respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states. That last formulation is India’s standing objection to the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, which passes through Indian territory under the illegal occupation of Pakistan, and is the reason India has consistently declined to endorse the Belt and Road Initiative even as other members express support for it.
