The Prime Minister left this morning for Central Asia, with a State Visit to Tashkent on August 29 and 30 followed by the 26th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Summit at Bishkek. A bedrock and glacier collapse in Nepal’s Rasuwa district on August 26 dammed a river and then burst it, in an event that has been widely and wrongly described both as a glacial lake outburst flood and as a Koshi basin disaster; it was neither, and this edition explains why the distinction matters. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India told the Supreme Court it will adopt red hexagonal warning labels for foods high in fat, sugar or salt, abandoning the star-rating model it had earlier favoured. The Ministry of External Affairs said India and China are working out how to activate the eight-point consensus from the 25th round of Special Representatives’ talks. A High-Powered Task Force chaired by Nandan Nilekani opened public consultation on reforming public examinations. Tamil Nadu notified three elephant corridors covering more than 10,300 hectares, the first tranche of 41 the Madras High Court ordered expedited. Coal stocks turned critical at 45 thermal plants while the monsoon ran 13 per cent below normal, and India marked National Sports Day on Major Dhyan Chand’s 121st birth anniversary.
