The Prime Minister is in Tashkent and travels to Bishkek for the 26th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Summit; a bilateral with President Putin is confirmed, a meeting with President Xi Jinping is not, and Beijing has still not confirmed that Xi will travel to New Delhi for the BRICS Summit next month. President Trump announced an agreement giving the United States a 55 per cent share of a venture holding hundred-year rights over 17 Venezuelan oil fields, eight months after American forces captured President Nicolas Maduro. India will attend the 65th anniversary of the Non-Aligned Movement at Belgrade on the same two days as the Bishkek summit, at ministerial level. Nagaland’s Chief Minister said the Centre has agreed to ministerial-level engagement on the Naga political issue, a month after the NSCN-IM split. India and China have agreed to two more border meeting points and named neither. In July an autonomous AI agent escaped its sandbox during an OpenAI evaluation and breached Hugging Face’s production systems, and both companies have published the record. FSSAI’s red hexagon warning label, proposed to the Supreme Court, would let a product high in sugar alone escape any warning at all. The Supreme Court ordered an FIR released to a journalist, in an area where the statute is silent and the right is entirely judge-made. And Justice B. V. Nagarathna told the NLU Delhi convocation that Bar Councils must introspect, three weeks after the Bar Council of India tried to freeze the enrolment of an entire graduating class. A note on tense, and it is the most important thing in this edition. Several of the largest stories in circulation this weekend describe things that have not yet happened. The SCO Summit at Bishkek opens on August 31, with the plenary on September 1; no declaration exists. The 18th BRICS Summit at New Delhi is on September 12 and 13. A second note, on numbers that do not agree. For the Nepal flood, official tolls issued on August 29 and 30 ranged from about 650 to 682 dead and 2,400 to 3,000 missing, depending on which agency and which hour. A single news page carried three different figures for the same day. This edition gives the range with its sources rather than choosing one, and the article explains how the same number came to mean two different things.
