Why in News
The 1st World Yogasana Sports Championship (WYC) 2026 was inaugurated in Ahmedabad, Gujarat on June 4, 2026, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressing the opening ceremony virtually at approximately 6:40 PM. Over 400 athletes from 60+ countries are competing in the June 4–8 event — the first international championship ever held for Yogasana as a competitive sport. India’s hosting of this event is a central pillar of its strategy to secure Olympic recognition for Yogasana.
What Is Yogasana as a Sport?
Yogasana refers to the competitive performance of yoga postures (asanas) evaluated for precision, technique, grace, and difficulty. Unlike meditative or therapeutic yoga, competitive Yogasana is judged by trained referees against standardised criteria. The Yogasana Sports Federation of India (YSFI) — recognised by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports — governs the sport in India and has been working with the International Yoga Sports Federation (IYSF) to standardise global rules.

| Traditional Yogasana | Classical asana sequences — forward bends, backbends, twisting poses |
| Artistic Yogasana | Choreographed performance with music — judged on aesthetics and difficulty |
| Rhythmic Pairs | Paired artistic performance — synchronisation and grace |

Yoga Diplomacy — India’s Soft Power Tool
India has systematically used yoga as an instrument of cultural diplomacy and soft power since 2014:
| Milestone | Year | Detail |
|---|---|---|
| International Day of Yoga established | 2015 | UNGA Resolution 69/131; June 21 designated |
| First IDY observed globally | 2015 | 177 co-sponsoring nations — record for a UNGA Resolution |
| Yoga included in school curricula | 2016 | NEP and CBSE curricula |
| Khelo India Yogasana introduced | 2021 | First competitive Yogasana in national games framework |
| YSFI recognised by Ministry of Sports | 2021 | Official sports body status |

| 1st World Yogasana Sports Championship | 2026 | Ahmedabad (current event) |
Olympic Bid for Yogasana
For a sport to be included in the Olympic Games, it must:
- Be recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC)
- Have a global governing body (IYSF in this case)
- Be practised in a sufficient number of countries (75+ for men, 40+ for women)
- Demonstrate anti-doping compliance (WADA standards)
- Go through IOC programme evaluation for a specific Games cycle
Current status: The International Yoga Sports Federation (IYSF) has IOC provisional recognition. The WYC 2026’s participation from 60+ countries strengthens the case for full IOC recognition and eventually inclusion as a demonstration or medal sport in a future Olympic Games. India is targeting the 2032 Brisbane Olympics or 2036 (India’s bid) as the earliest realistic inclusion window.
