Soil Organic Carbon

Soil Organic Carbon (SOC) is the carbon component of soil organic matter, made up of decomposed plant and animal residues, microbes and root exudates. It is a primary indicator of soil fertility and structure, governing water retention, nutrient cycling and biological activity. Globally, soils store more carbon than the atmosphere and vegetation combined, so building SOC through better land management is both a food-security and a climate-mitigation strategy. Depletion of SOC through intensive tillage and chemical farming is a major driver of land degradation.
