Biochar

Biochar is a fine-grained, porous, carbon-rich material produced by pyrolysis, the heating of organic biomass (crop residue, wood, manure) at high temperature in the absence or near-absence of oxygen. When added to soil it improves water retention, nutrient availability and microbial health, while the carbon it contains resists decomposition for hundreds of years, making it a long-term carbon sink. Biochar therefore doubles as a soil amendment and a carbon dioxide removal (CDR) technique recognised under climate frameworks.
Relevant for GS3 (climate mitigation, soil health, sustainable agriculture, waste-to-wealth). Biochar offers a low-tech route to negative emissions and a productive use for agricultural residue, reducing stubble burning that fuels North India's winter air pollution.
