The Primeiro Comando da Capital (PCC, 'First Capital Command') is Brazil's largest criminal organisation and the largest in Latin America by membership, founded on August 31, 1993 in the Taubaté Prison, São Paulo state. It self-styled its founding as a response to brutal prison conditions (referencing the 1992 Carandiru massacre) but rapidly evolved into a profit-driven criminal enterprise. PCC dominates São Paulo state and has built an extensive nationwide network, with estimated membership exceeding 40,000+. Revenue sources include cocaine trafficking, prison-economy control (drug distribution, contracts), extortion, and large-scale money laundering.
