National Quantum Mission
"India's national programme to build quantum computers, secure communication and sensing capabilities by 2031"
The National Quantum Mission (NQM) is a Government of India programme approved by the Union Cabinet on 19 April 2023 with an outlay of Rs 6,003.65 crore for the period 2023-24 to 2030-31. It seeks to seed and scale up research and industry in quantum technologies, exploiting quantum phenomena such as superposition and entanglement. The mission is built around four Thematic Hubs working on quantum computing, quantum communication, quantum sensing and metrology, and quantum materials and devices. It aims to make India one of the leading nations in quantum science and technology.
High relevance for GS3 (frontier science and technology, cybersecurity, computing). Quantum computers can solve certain problems far faster than classical machines and threaten current encryption, making the mission strategically important for defence, finance and communication security.
