The founder effect is a phenomenon in population genetics in which a new or surviving population is established by a small number of individuals carrying only a fraction of the genetic variation present in the original, larger source population. Because all subsequent generations descend from this narrow founding group, the population's genetic diversity remains permanently constrained by the diversity of the founders, a limitation that numerical population growth alone does not correct, since more individuals descended from the same small gene pool still carry only that gene pool's variation. Low genetic diversity resulting from a founder effect has two principal biological consequences relevant to conservation. First, it raises susceptibility to disease, since a genetically uniform population lacks the range of immune-response variants that would allow at least some individuals to resist a given pathogen, making the entire population more likely to be affected uniformly by an outbreak. Second, it increases the risk of inbreeding depression, reduced fertility, viability and overall fitness resulting from the increased likelihood that related individuals will mate and express harmful recessive traits. Every wild Asiatic lion alive today descends from a small remnant population protected in the early twentieth century within the Junagadh princely state in Gujarat, after hunting had reduced the species elsewhere to extinction. This is the textbook Indian illustration of a founder effect: a population that has grown from a few dozen individuals to 891 by 2025 still carries the genetic constraint of its original founders, and correcting it requires either genetic exchange with a separate population or the deliberate establishment of an independently founded population elsewhere, neither of which numerical growth within the same closed system achieves.
