Climate Whiplash

Climate whiplash describes a sequence rather than a single condition: an abnormally wet season drives abundant vegetation growth, particularly of fast-responding fine fuels such as grasses, and this is then followed rapidly by severe heat and drought that cures the fresh growth into dry, continuous, highly combustible material. The insight this concept supplies is that hazard, whether wildfire, flood, or agricultural stress, depends on the sequence of conditions rather than on any single extreme viewed in isolation: a consistently dry year grows little fuel to burn, and a consistently wet year does not cure what it grows, so it is the wet-then-dry oscillation itself that maximises both the quantity and the flammability of fuel. Attribution science has begun quantifying this mechanism directly. A World Weather Attribution study published around 30 July 2026 found that a rainy start to 2026 in western Europe, followed by three consecutive heatwaves between late May and mid-July, produced fire-weather conditions made up to twenty times more likely by climate change, with the likelihood of severe southern European wildfires roughly doubling since 1981. The concept extends beyond wildfire to any system where prior wet conditions create a false sense of security about a subsequent dry period, and it is directly transferable to Indian analysis, where increasingly erratic monsoon behaviour, a strong wet spell followed by an abrupt dry spell, produces comparable compounding effects on agriculture, water storage and fire risk in the Himalayan and Western Ghats forests.
