Beneficiation
"The process of concentrating a mined mineral by removing waste rock and impurities, the intermediate industrial step between mining and full refining."
Beneficiation is the set of physical and chemical processes, including crushing, grinding, magnetic or gravity separation, flotation and leaching, used to concentrate the valuable mineral content of an ore and remove waste material (gangue) after extraction but before refining into pure metal or usable chemical form. It sits between mining and refining in the mineral value chain, and is itself a technically demanding, capital-intensive step that many resource-rich developing countries, including India, have historically lacked at scale. Beneficiation matters strategically because a country can hold large mineral deposits and still be import-dependent if it cannot economically concentrate and process that ore domestically. India's National Mineral Inventory records substantial ore resources for several critical minerals, cobalt, copper, graphite and nickel, but a large share of that material has not been converted into economically extractable reserves, and virtually none is processed into refined, usable material within the country. The absence of beneficiation and refining capacity, rather than any shortage of underlying deposits, is described as India's 'reserve-to-refining gap.' Policy instruments aimed at building beneficiation capacity in India include the mineral processing parks and strategic stockpile envisaged under the National Critical Mineral Mission (launched January 2025), the explicit processing mandate of the proposed rare-earth corridors in Odisha, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, and the Rare Earth Permanent Magnet scheme (approved November 2025), which targets integrated sintered magnet manufacturing, a downstream step built on successful beneficiation and refining upstream of it.
