The Claim That Should Not Be Repeated

The official release states that the 300.50 GW “accounts for over 54 per cent of India’s total electricity generation.”

Do not reproduce that sentence. It conflates installed capacity share with generation share, and the two diverge sharply. Solar and wind have low capacity utilisation factors, typically in the high teens to mid twenties for solar; coal plants run far higher. A source can therefore hold a majority of installed capacity while supplying a minority of units generated. Coal still supplies roughly three-quarters of India’s electricity generation.

Critical Analysis

Capacity targets are being met early; grid decarbonisation is not keeping pace. That gap is the whole story, and it is not a criticism of the achievement. It is a statement about where the binding constraint has moved.

The constraints are now downstream. They are transmission and evacuation capacity, round-the-clock firming, storage economics and the financial health of distribution companies. A solar park that cannot evacuate its output, or a discom that cannot pay for it, does not decarbonise anything. This is why Rajasthan’s move toward hybrids and storage is the more meaningful development in the announcement than the headline number.

Firm capacity is the missing piece. Non-fossil capacity includes large hydro and nuclear, which are firm, alongside solar and wind, which are not. The composition matters more than the total, and a 500 GW headline that is overwhelmingly variable will not by itself displace coal generation.

Rajasthan is the right case study precisely because it has the resource abundance to make the downstream constraints visible: the state’s problem is no longer finding sun or wind.
