What Is White Rabbit

White Rabbit is an open-source technology, originally developed at CERN for particle-accelerator experiments, that extends the Precision Time Protocol (PTP) to achieve extraordinary accuracy over ordinary Ethernet and fibre-optic networks.

The Accuracy Leap

The network delivers time synchronisation to better than one nanosecond (less than a billionth of a second) between distant clocks. This is orders of magnitude tighter than what GPS-based synchronisation typically provides, and crucially, it travels through the ground via cable rather than depending on a satellite signal that can be jammed, spoofed or switched off.

How It Works

The system uses the Precision Time Protocol (IEEE 1588) and adds phase-locking, which continuously measures and corrects the tiny drift that every clock experiences. By accounting for the exact time a signal takes to travel down a length of fibre, White Rabbit can align a distant clock to the master clock with sub-nanosecond precision.

Who Is Building It

The project is led by the Legal Metrology Division of the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, which is responsible for standards of measurement in India, including time.
