The 29th meeting of the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) was held on July 9, 2026 at the Central Academy for State Forest Service (CASFOS), Coimbatore, chaired by Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav, and released STRIDES 2026 along with a Roadmap to Rescue.
What is the NTCA
The National Tiger Conservation Authority is a statutory body constituted in 2006 under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, following amendments recommended by the Tiger Task Force. It provides statutory teeth to Project Tiger, the flagship conservation programme launched in 1973. The Union Environment Minister is its Chairperson, and the Authority oversees the country’s network of tiger reserves, approves tiger conservation plans and enforces standards of protection.
India is central to the global effort: the country hosts about 75% of the world’s wild tigers, making the NTCA’s governance decisions significant well beyond national borders.
Key Outcomes of the 29th Meeting
The meeting released two major documents and cleared routine governance items.
STRIDES 2026 is the Status of Tiger Reserves: Infrastructure, Development, Ecology and Social parameters. It is an assessment framework that benchmarks tiger reserves not only on ecology but also on the infrastructure and social parameters that determine long-term conservation success.
The “Roadmap to Rescue” is a strategic roadmap for temporary and transit facilities used in the rescue, rehabilitation and release of wild animals within tiger landscapes. As tiger numbers recover and human-tiger interfaces multiply, standardised transit facilities are essential for humane and scientific animal management.
