The amount of material, data, or cargo processed or handled by a system in a given period, a measure of operational efficiency

Modern English compound: through + put (how much is put through a system)

Capacity Output Processing capacity Volume handled
Bottleneck Congestion
"The Haldia Bulk Terminal's automation reduces turnaround time and increases throughput to 4 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA) without expanding the physical port footprint."

Technical but frequently appearing in infrastructure and logistics answers. Port throughput, highway throughput, data throughput (telecom), the same concept applies across sectors. Use it in GS-3 answers on port development, Sagarmala scheme, and logistics efficiency. 'Increasing throughput' is stronger than 'handling more cargo'.
