The amount of material, data, or cargo processed or handled by a system in a given period — a measure of operational efficiency

Modern English compound: through + put (how much is put through a system)

Capacity Output Processing capacity Volume handled
Bottleneck Congestion
"The Haldia Bulk Terminal's automation reduces turnaround time and increases throughput to 4 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA) without expanding the physical port footprint."

Technical but frequently appearing in infrastructure and logistics answers. Port throughput, highway throughput, data throughput (telecom) — the same concept applies across sectors. Use it in GS-3 answers on port development, Sagarmala scheme, and logistics efficiency. 'Increasing throughput' is stronger than 'handling more cargo'.
