Synthetic Biology
"An engineering approach to biology that designs and builds new biological parts, devices and organisms for useful functions"
Synthetic biology is an interdisciplinary field that applies engineering principles to biology, designing and constructing new genetic circuits, metabolic pathways or even whole organisms to perform specific tasks. It goes beyond editing existing genes to writing and assembling DNA sequences that do not occur in nature, enabling microbes to produce medicines, fuels, materials and food ingredients. India released a National Biotechnology Development Strategy and the BioE3 policy to build a bio-based economy in which synthetic biology is a core enabling platform.
Relevant for GS3 (biotechnology, bioeconomy, health, industrial innovation and biosecurity). Synthetic biology underpins the government's BioE3 (Biotechnology for Economy, Environment and Employment) policy, approved in 2024, which targets high-performance biomanufacturing.
