"Posthumous UN award honouring peacekeepers killed in service, named after the 2nd UN Secretary-General who died in a 1961 plane crash during a Congo mission."

The Dag Hammarskjöld Medal is the United Nations' posthumous award for military, police, and civilian personnel who lose their lives while serving in UN peacekeeping operations. It is named after Dag Hammarskjöld (1905-1961), the second Secretary-General of the United Nations (1953-1961), a Swedish economist and diplomat who himself died on September 18, 1961 in a plane crash near Ndola in then-Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia) while on a UN mission during the Congo Crisis. Hammarskjöld was posthumously awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1961 — the only UN Secretary-General to receive it. The Medal is conferred annually on the International Day of UN Peacekeepers (May 29). Since 1948, approximately 4,200+ UN peacekeepers have been killed in service; India has lost ~180+ peacekeepers — the highest of any contributing country. On May 29, 2026, UN Secretary-General António Guterres conferred the medal posthumously on Lance Havildar Harbhajan Singh (MONUSCO, DR Congo) and Naib Subedar Sujit Kumar Pradhan (UNMISS, South Sudan).
