Axiom Mission 4 (Ax-4)
"Private ISS mission on which IAF Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla became the first Indian to visit the International Space Station."
Axiom Mission 4 (Ax-4) was a private human spaceflight to the International Space Station operated by Axiom Space with NASA and SpaceX, launched on June 25, 2025. Indian Air Force test pilot and ISRO astronaut-designate Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla served as mission pilot, becoming the second Indian in space after Rakesh Sharma in 1984 and the first Indian to visit the ISS. The crew spent about 18 days aboard, and the SpaceX Dragon capsule splashed down off San Diego. ISRO contributed a set of microgravity experiments conducted by Shukla. The mission remains relevant as a stepping stone for India's Gaganyaan human spaceflight programme, whose crewed flight is targeted in 2026.
GS3 (space technology, achievements of Indians in science). Prelims: Ax-4 launched June 25, 2025, Shukla first Indian on the ISS, ISRO experiments. Mains: India's human spaceflight roadmap and international space partnerships.
- 1 Operated by Axiom Space with NASA and SpaceX
