Background: The package included the dedication of the 9 MMTPA HPCL Rajasthan Refinery Limited (HRRL) at Pachpadra in Balotra, India’s first greenfield integrated refinery-cum-petrochemical complex, built at over Rs 79,450 crore; the foundation for Jaipur Metro Phase-2, a roughly 41 km north-south corridor costing over Rs 13,037 crore; the dedication of the SJVN 1,000 MW Bikaner solar plant and the NHPC 300 MW Karnisar solar plant built with domestically made modules; and the new Jodhpur airport terminal along with the Modified UDAN scheme. About 54,000 appointment letters were also handed to youth at a Rozgar Utsav. This connects to Rajasthan industrial development, energy security, urban infrastructure and connectivity.

4. Southwest Monsoon Advances over the Thar and Eastern Rajasthan

Why in News: The southwest monsoon advanced into more parts of Rajasthan around 3 July 2026, and heavy rain caused waterlogging in Dungarpur, with the India Meteorological Department issuing heavy-rain alerts for the Kota and Udaipur divisions on 4 to 5 July.

Background: Heavy overnight rain flooded low-lying areas of Dungarpur district in southern Rajasthan, while the IMD forecast heavy rain and 40 to 60 kmph winds across Jaipur, Ajmer, Bhilwara, Chittorgarh and other eastern districts, with isolated very heavy rainfall likely over East Rajasthan. The Bay of Bengal branch of the monsoon usually reaches eastern Rajasthan first, bringing rain to districts such as Kota, Bundi and Jhalawar, while the arid western districts of Jaisalmer, Barmer and Bikaner receive far less. The Aravalli range shapes this east-west rainfall divide, blocking moisture from spreading deeper into the desert. This connects to Rajasthan physical geography, the Aravallis and disaster management.

RPSC Relevance: Prelims southwest monsoon branches, Aravalli rain shadow, Thar Desert. Mains GS1 Indian monsoon and geography; GS3 drought and water management.

Prelims Fact Detail
Phenomenon Southwest monsoon advance over Rajasthan

5. Great Indian Bustard: Rajasthan’s State Bird and Conservation Priority

Why in News: The Great Indian Bustard, or Godawan, the state bird of Rajasthan, remains at the centre of conservation efforts in the Thar in 2026 as one of India’s most critically endangered species.

Background: The Great Indian Bustard is largely confined to the Desert National Park near Jaisalmer, with a small surviving population, and is listed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List. Threats include collisions with power lines, habitat loss and predation, prompting captive-breeding and conservation-breeding programmes at Sam and Ramdevra. The Supreme Court has issued directions on underground power cabling in bustard habitats to reduce mortality. This connects to Rajasthan wildlife conservation, endangered species and desert ecology.

RPSC Relevance: Prelims Great Indian Bustard (Godawan), Desert National Park, IUCN Critically Endangered. Mains GS3 species conservation, habitat protection and green-energy trade-offs.
