Background and Context
The ecological footprint framework converts every human demand on nature, food, timber, fibre, the land under our infrastructure, and the forest needed to absorb our carbon, into a single unit, the global hectare. Set the total human footprint against the planet’s biocapacity, and the ratio tells you whether we are living within our means. For decades now we have not been. Overshoot Day, once in December, has crept steadily earlier as consumption has outrun regeneration, and 2026’s late-July date is among the earliest on record.
India’s place in this accounting is instructive. A poor and populous country consumes little per head, so the average Indian’s footprint of about 1.1 global hectares is a fraction of the American or European figure. That is why India has no overshoot day: extend the Indian lifestyle to all humanity and the planet could cope.
