The Science — Brain Development in First 6 Years

The 1,000-Day Window

Nutrition scientists refer to the “first 1,000 days” (conception to age 2) as the most critical for brain development:

  • Brain forms 80% of its adult structure by age 3
  • Neuronal connections (synapses) form at 1 million per second in early infancy
  • Protein, iron, zinc, iodine, omega-3 fatty acids are critical for myelination and cognitive development

Consequences of Early Malnutrition

Deficiency Brain Impact
Iron deficiency Impairs myelination; reduces IQ by 5–10 points
Iodine deficiency Cretinism (severe); cognitive delay (mild-moderate)
Protein deficiency Kwashiorkor — brain atrophy
Stunting (chronic) Permanently reduced cognitive capacity; school performance

India’s Nutrition Status — Key Indicators (NFHS-5, 2019–21)

Indicator India (%) Target
Stunting (<5 years) 35.5% <25%
Wasting (<5 years) 19.3% <5%
Underweight (<5 years) 32.1% <20%
Anaemia (6–59 months) 67.1% <40%
Anaemia (women 15–49) 57.0% <35%
Exclusive breastfeeding (0–6 months) 63.7% >70%

India’s child malnutrition remains among the highest in the world despite economic growth — the “nutrition paradox.”
