The one rule that governs everything here
Ornament loses marks. Precision wins them. Examiners reward clarity and economy and penalise decoration. Wordcraft never teaches a word so you can sound impressive. It teaches the word that is exactly right, the pair you must never swap, the verb a noun takes, and the fifteen words you can delete.
Glossary from the edition
18 words, each quoted in the sentence where it appeared in the 10 September 2026 edition. Meaning first, then the sentence, then where it came from.
A relationship in which each side depends on the other. It is not the same as dependence, which runs one way, and the difference is the whole of the argument about whether a relationship is leverage or partnership.
हिंदी: परस्पर निर्भरता
India’s strategy is to tie economic interdependence, the $4 billion crisis credit, to security architecture, the coastal radar chain and patrol vessel transfers, before any third party can convert commercial leverage into military presence.
From Rajnath Singh in Colombo for First Indian Defence Minister Visit to Sri Lanka in 38 Years · Keep three apart in an answer. Dependence is one-way and creates vulnerability. Interdependence is mutual and creates restraint. Asymmetric interdependence is mutual but unequal, and that is the one most India-neighbourhood questions are really about.
Moving activity, authority or resources away from a single centre. In administration it means devolving power downward; in industrial policy, as here, it means deliberately steering investment away from the dominant cluster.
हिंदी: विकेंद्रीकरण
Its central design move is decentralisation: higher capital subsidies in non-focus areas (up to 35 per cent, raised from the previous 25 per cent) to push aerospace clusters into Belagavi, Hassan, Mysuru, Chitradurga and Vijayapura beyond Bengaluru.
From Karnataka Approves Aerospace Policy 2026-2031 Targeting Rs 60,000 Crore and 60,000 Jobs · In GS2 the word means devolution to panchayats and municipalities under the 73rd and 74th Amendments. In GS3 it means industrial dispersal. Same word, two syllabus homes, and an answer that signals which sense it is using reads as controlled rather than vague.
Unable to match rivals on price, cost or quality. Note that it describes the firm or place that loses out, not the market: a market without rivalry is uncompetitive in a different and opposite sense, which is why the word needs its context.
हिंदी: प्रतिस्पर्धा में पिछड़ा; लागत में भारी
Bengaluru’s aerospace and IT labour market is the tightest in India; competition for engineers, technicians and tool-and-die workers has driven wages to levels that make the Tier-2 and Tier-3 supplier ecosystem uncompetitive relative to Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.
From Karnataka Approves Aerospace Policy 2026-2031 Targeting Rs 60,000 Crore and 60,000 Jobs · The ambiguity is real and worth avoiding. An uncompetitive firm cannot win business. An uncompetitive market has too few players competing. If the sentence could be read either way, name the thing: "uncompetitive on cost", "a market with weak competition".
Not able to be directed or restrained. In strategic writing it is a claim about a specific actor or front, not a mood word, and it should be followed by the reason it cannot be controlled.
हिंदी: बेकाबू; नियंत्रण से बाहर
The Houthi front is also uncontrollable: Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia risk a Saudi response that pulls regional actors in unpredictably.
From Dangerous Phase: The US-Iran Escalation and What It Means for the World · The colon in that sentence is the model. Uncontrollable on its own is assertion; uncontrollable followed by the mechanism is analysis. In an escalation answer, always supply the because.
Doing less well than a benchmark, an expectation or a peer group. The word is meaningless without the comparator, which is what separates it from simple decline.
हिंदी: अपेक्षा से कम प्रदर्शन
Standard analysis would treat IT underperformance as a temporary result of global slowdown.
From Market Turbulence Is Here to Stay: Crude, Fed and RBI All Tightening Together · Always ask: under-performing against what? The index, the sector, last year, or the analyst forecast? A sentence that names the benchmark is checkable. One that does not is a mood, and examiners can tell.
Combining by multiplication rather than addition, so that two effects together are larger than their sum. The opposite term of art is additive.
हिंदी: गुणात्मक; गुणा होकर बढ़ने वाला
When both rise together, the domestic price impact is multiplicative.
From Market Turbulence Is Here to Stay: Crude, Fed and RBI All Tightening Together · This is the precise word for what people loosely call a "double whammy". If a rupee depreciation and a crude spike each raise the import bill, the two together raise it by more than the two increases added, because each acts on the other. Saying multiplicative rather than "compounding" costs nothing and is exact.
Bringing two things into agreement: two accounts, two claims, or two competing principles. In answer writing it names the step where you show how a conflict is resolved rather than merely stating both sides.
हिंदी: सामंजस्य; दो माँगों में मेल बैठाना
The reconciliation is procedural: follow the existing law, which already balances both imperatives, rather than substitute an administrative shortcut that protects one at the cost of the other.
From SIR Violates a Constituent Assembly Promise: 13 Crore Electors Deleted · The most reusable sentence pattern in the pack. "The reconciliation is procedural" tells the reader that the conflict is dissolved by following a process, not by preferring one value. Other reconciliations are temporal (do one first) or institutional (different bodies decide different parts).
Choking off. Used of economies, it means squeezing access to trade, finance or energy until the target cannot function. It is a deliberately physical metaphor and carries a judgement with it.
हिंदी: गला घोंटना; आर्थिक रूप से दम घोंटना
The editorial’s central diagnostic is that the US has previously alternated between economic strangulation and military strikes.
From Dangerous Phase: The US-Iran Escalation and What It Means for the World · Register warning. Strangulation is an editorial word, not a neutral one; it says the squeeze is illegitimate. In a GS2 answer prefer economic coercion or sanctions pressure unless you intend the judgement and can defend it.
A difference of opinion. Weaker than dispute, which implies a formal contest, and much weaker than conflict. Diplomatic drafting chooses between these three deliberately.
हिंदी: मतभेद
India manages two centrifugal forces by separating the political track (where disagreement must be bracketed) from the developmental track (where joint declarations are already delivered).
From Bringing Coherence and Cohesion to BRICS: India's Summit Test · Note the verb: disagreement is bracketed, meaning set aside so that work can continue elsewhere. That is a specific diplomatic technique and naming it is worth more in a BRICS answer than another sentence about multipolarity.
Guided by conscience and careful about duty. Distinguish conscious, meaning awake or aware, which is a different word with a different spelling and sound.
हिंदी: कर्तव्यनिष्ठ; अंतरात्मा के अनुसार
Chaudhary could access legal representation, a sympathetic media, and a conscientious bench.
From Ray of Hope: When Courts Push Back Against Reflexive NSA Detentions · The word is doing something uncomfortable in that sentence. If relief depended on drawing a conscientious bench, then conscientiousness is being described as a matter of luck, which is precisely the editorial’s complaint about access. That is the sentence to quote in an answer on preventive detention.
Unable to work together or exist together. In technology it is a statement about interfaces; in law and ethics it is a statement about principles that cannot both be honoured.
हिंदी: असंगत; आपस में मेल न खाने वाला
Technical barriers: incompatible backend systems, identity mapping, settlement mechanism design, and absent common security standards.
From UPI Can Do More Tricks Among BRICS: India's Cross-Border Payments Diplomacy · The useful contrast is with interoperable, today’s edition word. Incompatible systems cannot talk at all. Interoperable systems talk without being made identical. The space between the two is where standards bodies live.
Raising or maintaining pressure inside a vessel or cabin. A technical noun, and not the same as the figurative pressure applied to people.
हिंदी: दाब-नियंत्रण; दबाव बनाए रखना
The test also qualified the LOX Tank Pressurisation Module (LTPM), a subsystem intended for Gaganyaan LVM3 upper stages.
From ISRO Hot-Tests CE20 Cryogenic Engine at 220 kN, Uprating LVM3 Payload for Gaganyaan · Why a tank needs pressurising is worth one line in an answer: as propellant drains, the ullage space must be kept at pressure or the pumps cavitate. A candidate who can say that has understood the subsystem rather than memorised its acronym. On the verb: pressurise and pressure both mean to coerce in British and Indian usage, but American English keeps pressurize for the physical sense and uses pressure for people.
Holding supreme authority and answering to no higher power. In finance the adjective narrows to "belonging to a national government": sovereign debt is a state’s own borrowing, and a sovereign default is a state failing to repay it.
हिंदी: सार्वभौम; प्रभुसत्ता-संपन्न
Sri Lanka’s sovereign default in 2022, combined with IMF-mandated reforms and the fall of the Rajapaksa government, created a political opening.
From Rajnath Singh in Colombo for First Indian Defence Minister Visit to Sri Lanka in 38 Years · The trap is reading the financial sense as the political one. A sovereign default is a government failing to pay its creditors; it says nothing about the state losing sovereignty, though the conditions attached to the rescue often become exactly that argument. Sri Lanka in 2022 is the case where both senses sit in one paragraph, which is why the word repays care.
A formal assurance that something will be done or upheld, and the instrument that carries it. In constitutional writing the force of the word comes entirely from what backs the assurance.
हिंदी: प्रत्याभूति; पक्की गारंटी
This is a significant architectural innovation, because it provides an entrenched constitutional guarantee (amendable only by Parliament) rather than a statutory assembly removable by Parliament without constitutional process.
From MHA Proposes New Article 371(K) to Give Ladakh Its Own Elected Legislature · Grade the word before you use it. A statutory guarantee can be repealed by an ordinary majority. An entrenched constitutional guarantee needs the amendment procedure. A political guarantee is a promise. Writing "guarantee" without saying which one is the commonest empty sentence in a governance answer.
Legal responsibility for something, especially for a wrong or a debt. In accounting the plural narrows to what an entity owes, sitting opposite assets on a balance sheet.
हिंदी: दायित्व; कानूनी जिम्मेदारी
India’s response architecture rests on the Mental Healthcare Act, 2017, which decriminalised attempted suicide (removing Section 309 IPC criminal liability under Section 115 MHA), Tele-MANAS (launched 2022, 24-by-7 tele-mental-health helpline), and the National Suicide Prevention Strategy, 2022.
From Current Affairs Today, September 10, 2026, Complete News Roundup · Three liabilities worth keeping apart in GS2 and GS3: criminal liability exposes a person to punishment, civil liability to damages, and strict liability attaches without proving fault. The Mental Healthcare Act removed the first for attempted suicide without touching the others.
The stage of getting to know equipment, procedures or partners, before anything is done jointly at scale. In military writing it marks the lowest rung of a ladder of cooperation.
हिंदी: परिचय-प्रशिक्षण; प्रारंभिक अभ्यास
Signals graduation from platoon-level familiarisation to formation-level integrated live-fire.
From 22nd Yudh Abhyas Opens in Two Theatres at Mahajan and Auli with 3rd Multi-Domain Task Force · The ladder is examinable: familiarisation, then joint training, then interoperability, then integrated operations. Saying which rung an exercise has reached is far stronger than calling it "a sign of deepening ties".
Able to be moved from one holder, place or context to another. Of skills and doctrine it means they still work somewhere else; of rights and instruments it means ownership can pass.
हिंदी: हस्तांतरणीय; अन्यत्र लागू होने योग्य
Their doctrine and equipment are directly transferable to Auli.
From 22nd Yudh Abhyas Opens in Two Theatres at Mahajan and Auli with 3rd Multi-Domain Task Force · The claim in that sentence is geographical: an Alaska-based formation trains for cold and altitude, so moving it to Auli costs little in adaptation. Transferable is therefore an argument, not a description, and it can be contested.
The group holding entrenched power in a society or institution, treated as a collective. A separate sense, common in Indian official writing, is a place of business or a staffing strength: "the sanctioned establishment of the department".
हिंदी: सत्ता-प्रतिष्ठान; स्थापित वर्ग
But it has had an unintended consequence: the AfD can credibly claim to be the only authentic opposition to an establishment whose unity is defined by keeping it out.
From AfD's Saxony-Anhalt Win Is Not Just a Germany Story: Far-Right Momentum in Europe · The word is doing argumentative work here, so handle it carefully. Calling the mainstream parties an establishment already concedes the populist framing. If you use it in an essay, either own the framing or mark it: "what the AfD calls the establishment".
The seven lessons
One entry of each type, every day: a system, not a word list.
1 · Root & family
to push, to drive
From Latin pellere, to drive. Its other form, pulsum, gives the second English stem -puls-. That is the entire etymology, and once you can see the stem inside a word you never need the Latin again.
Read the column below downwards and the shared spine does the teaching for you. Every word is a prefix bolted onto the same three letters, and the prefix supplies the whole of the difference in meaning.
propelpush forwardpropel, propulsionexpelpush outexpel, expulsionrepelpush backrepel, repulsioncompelpush together, force from outsidecompel, compulsionimpelpush from withinimpel, impulsedispelpush apart, scatterdispelpulsthe second stem: a push, a beatpulse, impulse, repulsionWhere today’s edition uses them. ISRO propels a payload harder by uprating an engine. Sanctions try to compel a state. Two different angers impel a German electorate. A court repels a detention order. Four stories that share nothing else, running on one root.
The two stems. Pellere gives the verbs, pulsum gives the nouns. That is why propel pairs with propulsion, expel with expulsion, repel with repulsion, compel with compulsion. If you know the verb you can build the noun without guessing, and the one irregular member is dispel, which has no everyday noun at all.
Compel, impel and the difference that matters. Compel drives from outside: a force acts on you and you comply. Impel drives from inside: something in you moves you to act. Sanctions compel. Grievance impels. Today’s AfD editorial is entirely about the second, which is why "sanctions impelled Iran" would be the wrong verb in a West Asia answer and a small but visible error.
The strategic-studies bonus. Thomas Schelling’s pair, deterrence and compellence, is built on this root. Deterrence stops an actor doing something; compellence makes an actor do something, or undo it. Compellence is harder, because it demands visible surrender. Naming the distinction is worth a mark in almost any coercion question, and the root is the way to keep it.
Drawn from across the edition: the CE20 article on propulsion, and the West Asia editorial on pressure and strikes.
2 · Confusable pair
authentication vs authorisation
Who are you? · What may you do?
Today’s UIDAI story is an authentication story. A face is captured, matched against a stored template, and the system returns a yes or a no about identity. That is all authentication ever does. It answers one question: are you who you claim to be?
Authorisation answers a different question, and it comes second: given that you are who you say, what are you permitted to do? A bank clerk and a bank customer may authenticate through exactly the same Aadhaar face match and then be authorised to do entirely different things.
| authentication | authorisation | |
|---|---|---|
| Asks | who are you? | what may you do? |
| Answers with | yes or no on identity | a set of permissions |
| Fails as | a false match or false reject | excess privilege, scope creep |
| Governed by | Aadhaar Act sections on authentication | purpose limitation, consent, the DPDP Act |
Why the confusion is expensive. Almost every privacy argument about Aadhaar is an authorisation argument wearing authentication clothes. Nobody seriously disputes that face matching works. The dispute is about which entities may ask, for what purpose, how often, and what they may retain afterwards. An answer that says "authentication raises privacy concerns" has not said anything. An answer that separates a reliable identity check from an unbounded permission to query has said the whole thing.
The third word. Identification is different again: it is one-to-many, asking who is this out of everyone enrolled, and it is what a face search across a database does. Authentication is one-to-one, checking a claim already made. Surveillance concerns attach far more strongly to identification, and collapsing the two is the commonest technical error in this area.
Spelling. Authorisation with an s is British and Indian; authorization with a z is American and is also the spelling used in most technical standards. Either is defensible in an answer; being inconsistent inside one answer is not.
From the UIDAI article, which sets out the capture, matching and response layers of the Face Authentication SDK released at Global Fintech Fest 2026.
3 · Collocation
the verbs of qualification
hot-tested · qualified · validated · man-rated · flight-proven
Today’s CE20 story is a test story, and testing has its own vocabulary. Each verb marks a different degree of confidence, and using a later one than the facts support claims that hardware is readier than it is. Space reporting gets this wrong constantly.
| Stage | The verb | What has actually been established |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | a component is bench-tested | it behaves on a rig, in isolation |
| 2 | an engine is hot-tested or hot-fired | it has run with real propellant, on the ground |
| 3 | a subsystem is qualified | it has met the specification across the required envelope |
| 4 | a design is validated | the design assumption itself has been shown to hold |
| 5 | a system is man-rated or human-rated | it meets the extra margins required to carry people |
| 6 | a vehicle is flight-proven | it has done the job in flight, more than once |
The step everyone skips. A ground hot test is stage two. It is genuinely important and it is not flight qualification. "ISRO hot-tested CE20 at 220 kN" is a precise sentence. "ISRO qualified the uprated CE20 for Gaganyaan" would be a different and much larger claim, and today’s article is careful to say that the test also qualified a specific subsystem, the LOX Tank Pressurisation Module, rather than the whole engine at the new thrust.
Man-rated is not a synonym for reliable. It is a defined margin standard: lower stress levels, more redundancy, abort capability, and a demonstrated failure history. This is why a launcher can be flight-proven for satellites and still not be man-rated, which is exactly the position LVM3 occupied before the Gaganyaan programme began adding those margins.
Where else the ladder runs. The same discipline governs drug trials (preclinical, phase I, approved, indicated for), and vaccines, and civil aviation certification. In every case the temptation is to borrow a verb from further up the ladder because it sounds more impressive, and in every case it is the sentence a careful reader checks first.
From the CE20 article, in which an engine is hot-tested at 220 kN and the test separately qualifies the LOX Tank Pressurisation Module.
4 · From the edition
interoperable
adjective · able to work with another system without becoming it
Today’s cross-border payments editorial rests on one adjective. Sanctioned economies, it says, need interoperable payments within BRICS as an existential matter rather than a cost saving. Read past the word and the piece is about plumbing. Read it properly and it is about sovereignty.
What the word claims. Two systems are interoperable when each can work with the other while remaining itself. Not merged, not standardised into a single platform, not one adopting the other’s rulebook. They agree on an interface and keep their internals. That is a far weaker and far more achievable demand than integration, and the difference is the entire diplomatic argument.
| Arrangement | What each side gives up | How hard it is |
|---|---|---|
| compatible | nothing; they simply do not clash | trivial |
| interoperable | agreement on an interface and standards | hard but bounded |
| integrated | separate operation; one system results | very hard, politically loaded |
| unified | institutional independence | usually impossible between states |
Why India reaches for it. An interoperable arrangement lets UPI connect to another country’s rails without either side conceding control of its own payment system, its data, or its monetary policy. That is precisely why it is the achievable ask at a BRICS summit and why "a BRICS currency" is not. One requires a shared interface; the other requires shared sovereignty.
The word travels. It is a defence term first: interoperability between the Indian Army and a partner force means they can operate together, which is exactly why today’s Yudh Abhyas story sits on the same ladder as the payments story. It is also a health-data term, a railways term (gauge and signalling) and a spectrum term. In each case the question is the same: can these two work together without one having to surrender?
Using it well. Interoperability is never free. It requires a standard, a body to maintain it, and a dispute mechanism. An answer that says "India should push for interoperable payments" is a slogan. One that names the standard, the settlement mechanism and the governance body is a policy proposal.
From the cross-border payments editorial, which lists incompatible backend systems, identity mapping and settlement design among the technical barriers.
5 · Say it shorter
when the parenthesis eats the sentence
the reader forgets the subject before the verb arrives
Current-affairs prose has a characteristic failure that has nothing to do with long words. A sentence starts well, then stops to explain each noun it meets, and by the time the main verb arrives the reader has lost the thread. Every explanation is accurate. The sentence is still broken.
Today’s edition is full of material that invites it, because almost every noun in a diplomacy story has a gloss attached: a ship has a class, a leader has a party, an agreement has a date, a port has a lease. The temptation is to put all of it in brackets, in one sentence.
The diagnosis. Read your sentence and mark where the subject appears and where its verb appears. If more than about fifteen words sit between them, the sentence has been eaten. It does not matter how good the intervening material is.
Three repairs, in order of preference.
| Repair | What you do | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Split | give the parenthesis its own sentence | when the aside is worth a full stop |
| Move | push the gloss to the end of the sentence | when it explains but does not qualify |
| Cut | delete it and put it in a table | when it is a fact, not an argument |
The third repair is the one people resist. Dates, hull numbers, lease terms and party labels are reference material. They belong in a fact table or a Facts Corner, where a reader can find them, not wedged into a sentence that is trying to make a point. A page that separates argument from reference reads twice as fast, and it is exactly how today’s articles are built.
The exam version. Under time pressure, in a Mains answer, the eaten sentence is a real risk because you are trying to prove you know the detail. The examiner is not counting glosses; they are following an argument. Put the detail in a short second sentence and the argument survives.
From the Colombo visit article, whose Why in News box carries a ship, a class, an agreement, two dates and three office-holders.
6 · Usage watch
quantum
noun · in Indian legal and official English, an amount or quantity
Today’s NSA editorial has a court awarding Rs 5 lakh in compensation, to be recovered from the salaries of the officers responsible. In Indian legal writing the natural phrase for that figure is the quantum of compensation, and you will meet it constantly: quantum of punishment, quantum of damages, quantum of relief, quantum of reservation.
This is standard, correct Indian usage. It is not an error and it is not to be scrubbed out. It comes straight from the Latin, meaning simply "how much", and it entered Indian law through the English courts. In a GS2 answer or an ethics case study, "the quantum of punishment must be proportionate" is exactly right.
| Phrase | Means | Register |
|---|---|---|
| quantum of punishment | how much sentence | Indian legal, standard |
| quantum of compensation | how much money awarded | Indian legal, standard |
| quantum meruit | as much as deserved; payment for work done | contract law, term of art |
| quantum leap | a sudden large change | journalese; avoid in formal prose |
| quantum computing | the physics sense | science; unrelated meaning |
The two cautions. First, a general reader outside India, and an examiner reading fast, will meet quantum in the physics sense before the legal one. Inside a legal sentence the context does the work; outside one, prefer amount or extent. Second, quantum leap is worth avoiding altogether: in physics a quantum jump is famously the smallest possible change, so the idiom means the opposite of what it says, and it has been worn out by press releases.
The plural. It is quanta in physics. In the legal sense the word is effectively uncountable and you will rarely need a plural at all; if you find yourself writing "quantums", rewrite the sentence.
The wider habit this belongs to. Indian official English has a legitimate register of its own: quantum, redressal, upliftment, preponement. Some are fully standard in Indian law, some are not standard anywhere else, and knowing which is which is a real skill. Quantum is on the safe side of that line. Use it in a legal context with confidence, and reach for amount everywhere else.
From the preventive detention editorial, in which the court awards Rs 5 lakh in compensation to be deducted from the salaries of the officers responsible.
7 · Idiom in formal register
Orwellian
adjective · of the machinery of the total state, especially its abuse of language
The Allahabad High Court, quashing a preventive detention this month, warned that an unhinged bureaucracy could reduce Uttar Pradesh to an "Orwellian dystopia". It is the strongest word available in that register, and today’s lesson is about not spending it carelessly.
What it actually claims. Not merely that a state is authoritarian. Orwell’s specific contribution was the idea that such a state works on the mind through language: a Ministry of Truth that manufactures falsehood, doublethink that holds two contradictory beliefs at once, a vocabulary shrunk until dissent cannot be phrased. If your example is only surveillance or only harsh punishment, you have a different complaint, and there are better words for it.
| Word | What it accuses the state of | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Orwellian | corrupting language and truth itself | Nineteen Eighty-Four |
| Kafkaesque | incomprehensible, unanswerable procedure | Kafka, The Trial |
| Draconian | punishment out of all proportion | Draco, the Athenian lawgiver |
| Panopticon | control through the possibility of being watched | Bentham, later Foucault |
| Dystopia | a bad place; the generic term | coined against More’s Utopia |
The test before you use it. Ask: is the abuse in this case done through language? A detention justified by a "concocted story", where the official record says the opposite of what happened, genuinely qualifies: the falsification is the mechanism. A slow, opaque, unanswerable process is Kafkaesque. A penalty far beyond the offence is draconian. Today’s editorial uses that word too, and correctly, of the detention law itself.
Why examiners are wary. Orwellian has been applied to CCTV, school uniforms, spam filters and parking enforcement. Overuse has made it a signal of temperature rather than of analysis. In an answer, use it once, immediately give the linguistic mechanism, and then move on. Used that way it is powerful precisely because the rest of the answer is measured.
The related coinages worth knowing. Doublethink, Newspeak, thoughtcrime, memory hole, Big Brother. Each is more specific than the adjective, and naming the specific one is almost always the stronger move: "the file was sent down the memory hole" says more than "the process was Orwellian".
From the preventive detention editorial, in which the court terms the allegations a "concocted story" and warns of an "Orwellian dystopia".

- The LOX Tank Pressurisation Module
- The full CE20 engine at 220 kN

-
Choose one Circle the letter of the correct option.
Two national payment systems agree an interface and each keeps its own rulebook. They are:

Fill the blank Circle the letter that completes the sentence.
A single BRICS currency would require shared ___ , which is why it is a much harder ask than shared rails.
- sovereignty

Which is NOT a requirement for interoperability?
- That both systems adopt identical internal architecture

Rajnath Singh met Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake in Colombo to operationalise the April 2025 defence agreement. It was the first visit by an Indian Defence Minister in 38 years. The subject and its verb were forty words apart. Splitting restores the main clause and the dropped detail moves to a fact table without loss.

What is the test for an eaten sentence?
- The distance between the subject and its main verb
- The total number of words
- The number of proper nouns

Find the word that would puzzle a general reader here.
The quantum of rainfall this season was below the long-period average.
Answer
quantum → amount. Outside a legal context the physics sense arrives first. Rainfall has an amount, or a total.
-
Choose one Circle the letter of the correct option.
Why is quantum leap criticised?
- In physics a quantum jump is the smallest possible change, so the idiom inverts its own meaning
- It is not a real phrase in English
- It is American usage unsuitable for Indian writing
- It can only be used of scientific subjects
Answer
In physics a quantum jump is the smallest possible change, so the idiom inverts its own meaning. The phrase says the opposite of what it intends, and decades of press-release use have flattened whatever force it had.
-
