A deep split or division within a group, community, or institution — especially one that results in the formation of opposing factions that refuse to reconcile.

Greek schisma, from schizein (to split) — the same root as 'schizophrenia' (split mind)

Rift Split Division Rupture
Unity Reconciliation Cohesion
"The Manipur ethnic conflict exposed a deep schism between the Meitei community in the valley and the Kuki-Zo groups in the hills — a divide so profound that the two communities had effectively ceased sharing civic spaces, markets, and roads by 2024."

Valuable in GS2 (Social Issues, Internal Security) and GS1 (Society) answers on communal divisions, ethnic conflicts, religious rifts, and political polarisation. Use when describing India's regional, linguistic, or caste-based divisions ('the schism between forward and backward caste politics'), or in IR answers on rifts within international organisations ('the schism within the G20 on climate finance'). More specific than 'divide' or 'difference' — implies a rupture that is deep and difficult to bridge.
