An authoritative or arbitrary order or decree, often issued without consultation or statutory process

Latin 'fiat' (let it be done)

Decree Edict
Consultation Deliberation
"A society registered under the Societies Registration Act can be reconstituted and its rules rewritten by executive fiat, which sounds like flexibility but produces both weak independence and weak accountability."

Useful in GS2 answers contrasting statutory bodies with those run on administrative fiat, e.g., 'An examination regulator built on fiat rather than statute owes candidates no enforceable duty.'
