"Reporters Without Borders' 2026 index, released April 30, 2026, ranked India 157th of 180, a historic low and a six-place fall."

The World Press Freedom Index is an annual ranking published by Reporters Without Borders, a Paris-based press-freedom NGO. In the 2026 edition, released around April 30, 2026, India ranked 157th out of 180 countries, down six places from 151st in 2025, its lowest position to date. RSF cited rising violence against journalists, highly concentrated media ownership and increasingly overt political alignment of outlets. Several neighbours ranked higher: Nepal (87), Sri Lanka (134), Bhutan (150) and Bangladesh (152). The index assesses political, economic, legislative, social and safety indicators. The Indian government has historically disputed RSF's methodology.
