Space Situational Awareness
"The capability to detect, track, catalogue and predict the motion of satellites and debris in orbit to protect space assets"
Space Situational Awareness (SSA) is the knowledge and tracking of objects in Earth orbit, including active satellites, defunct spacecraft, rocket bodies and fragments of debris, so that collisions and re-entries can be predicted and avoided. It combines radars, optical telescopes and data analysis to maintain a catalogue of orbital objects. India pursues SSA through ISRO's Project NETRA (Network for Space Object Tracking and Analysis) and the Indian Space Situational Awareness and Management Centre (IS4OM), set up in 2022, which issue collision-avoidance advisories for Indian satellites.
Relevant for GS3 (space technology, security, sustainability of outer space). With rising satellite launches and debris, SSA is vital to protect India's fleet and to enable safe access to space. ISRO has set a goal of achieving a Debris-Free Space Mission by 2030, and as of March 2026 about 129 trackable pieces of debris from Indian missions remained in orbit, keeping SSA topical.
