Rasa Shastra

Rasa Shastra is a specialised branch of classical Ayurveda concerned with the purification (shodhana) and calcination (marana) of minerals and metals, including mercury, lead and other substances, to render them therapeutically usable and bioavailable. It represents one of Ayurveda's most technically demanding traditions, requiring precise processing to convert raw, potentially toxic minerals into medicinal preparations. Rasa Shastra is also the branch of Ayurveda most documented in toxicology literature for heavy-metal contamination risk. Studies have found a meaningfully higher prevalence of detectable lead, mercury and arsenic in Rasa Shastra formulations compared with non-Rasa Shastra Ayurvedic medicines, and improperly prepared formulations have been linked to documented poisoning cases in India and abroad, making rigorous preparation standards a genuine public-health concern rather than a theoretical one. The discipline has drawn renewed attention through practitioners who combine it with modern evidentiary standards, systematic patient data collection and peer-reviewed publication, demonstrating that data-validated, safety-conscious Rasa Shastra practice is achievable even within a tradition carrying real documented risk.
