PM SVANidhi
"A Central Government scheme launched June 1, 2020 providing collateral-free working capital loans to street vendors affected by COVID-19 lockdowns"
PM Street Vendor's AtmaNirbhar Nidhi (PM SVANidhi) is a Central Government micro-credit scheme launched on 1 June 2020 under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA). The scheme provides collateral-free working capital loans to urban street vendors whose livelihoods were adversely affected by the COVID-19 lockdowns. Under the scheme, vendors can avail an initial loan of ₹10,000 (subsequently enhanced to ₹20,000 and ₹50,000 for first, second, and third tranches on timely repayment). The loans carry a subsidised interest rate, and vendors who repay on time receive a cashback incentive of up to 7% per annum on digital transactions. The scheme also provides digital literacy training and is linked to eight other Central welfare schemes through the 'SVANidhi se Samriddhi' convergence programme. By 2024, the scheme had disbursed over ₹13,000 crore to more than 60 lakh street vendors across urban India.
PM SVANidhi is a key GS2 (social welfare, urban governance, financial inclusion) and GS3 (micro-credit, informal economy, digital payments) topic. It represents India's attempt to formalise the large informal economy of street vendors — estimated at 50 lakh vendors nationally when the scheme launched. The scheme's digital payment incentive connects to the broader Digital India push. 'SVANidhi se Samriddhi' convergence with 8 welfare schemes is a model of last-mile delivery that examiners may test.
