Bundibugyo Ebolavirus
"One of six known Ebola virus species, first identified in Uganda (2007), with historic case-fatality rate of ~25-50% — strain behind the May 2026 DRC outbreak."
Bundibugyo ebolavirus (BDBV) is one of six known species of Ebola virus (family Filoviridae). It was first identified during an outbreak in Bundibugyo District, Uganda, in 2007 — the third human-pathogenic Ebola species identified after Zaire (1976) and Sudan (1976). Historic case-fatality rate ranges from ~25% (Uganda 2007 outbreak) to ~50% (DRC 2012 outbreak) — lower than the most lethal Zaire ebolavirus (50-90%) but still extremely dangerous. The 2026 outbreak in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) was first reported in May 2026 from Mongbwalu Health Zone, Ituri Province; WHO was alerted on May 5, 2026, DRC officially declared the outbreak on May 15, 2026, and WHO declared it a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) on May 17, 2026. As of May 27, 2026, the outbreak had recorded 1,000+ suspected infections and 220+ deaths. India dispatched emergency pharmaceutical supplies on May 28, 2026 to Africa CDC's Eastern Africa Regional Coordinating Centre in Uganda.
