Mains & Interview Importance

GS3 — Economy; Employment

  • Demographic dividend: India’s median age is ~28 years; 65% of population is below 35 years. Skill India is central to converting this demographic advantage into economic productivity
  • Formal vs. informal skilling: Only ~5% of India’s workforce is formally skilled (vs. 52% in the US, 68% in the UK, 80% in Japan); Skill India aims to close this gap
  • Industry 4.0 readiness: PMKVY 4.0’s focus on AI, 5G, green hydrogen, and drones prepares India’s workforce for the Fourth Industrial Revolution
  • Apprenticeship model: PM-NAPS’ earn-while-you-learn approach addresses the twin challenges of unemployment and skill mismatch

GS2 — Social Justice

  • JSS targets disadvantaged groups (women, SC/ST, rural youth) for inclusive skilling
  • Gender parity mandate: At least 40% women participation

Interview Angles

  • “India produces millions of graduates annually, but employers report a severe skill gap. Is the problem with education or with skilling programmes like PMKVY?”
  • “Only 5% of India’s workforce is formally skilled. Can government programmes alone bridge this gap, or is industry the primary solution?”
  • “PMKVY has trained 1.64 crore, but what percentage found employment? How should we measure the success of skill programmes?”
