Overview

The Lakhpati Didi Scheme is a flagship initiative under the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana — National Rural Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NRLM) aimed at catalysing economic empowerment and financial independence among rural women through Self-Help Groups (SHGs). A “Lakhpati Didi” is defined as a woman SHG member earning a sustainable annual household income of ₹1,00,000 or more, averaging over ₹10,000 per month for at least four agricultural seasons or business cycles.

Announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi from the ramparts of the Red Fort on August 15, 2023, the scheme shifts the SHG narrative from social and financial inclusion to entrepreneurial success. Over 3.01 crore women SHG members have achieved Lakhpati Didi status — surpassing the 3 crore target set in Interim Budget 2024-25 ahead of schedule. The Union Budget 2026-27 further extended the programme with enhanced provisions including the “She-Mark” badge for women entrepreneurs, and the target has been raised to 6 crore Lakhpati Didis by 2029-30.
